The question of the site being of the first importance and one which necessarily makes the plan of the Mint, as well as all minor details subservient thereto, I presume it will be sufficient for present purposes and the saving of time that I report solely upon the site, or such building areas as may be suitable for so important a public work.
The plan furnished, occupies a space of 330 feet principal frontage by depth of 270 feet, and thus Mr. Shindler suggests "should be enlarged to a larger area so as to enclose a space in front for greater security." I may therefore take it for granted that an area 217 feet square ought to be the least that should be chosen either for the purpose of carrying out the plans furnished or any modification of them that local circumstances may render imperative.
A level area of the dimensions given, in a position suitable for the requirements of the Mint, that is to be at a moderate height above the sea and centrally situated for security, and so as to facilitate the reception of bullion and transport of Coin to and from the Mint, is not at the disposal of the Colonial Government under the circumstances.
